This summer we held a great graffiti workshop at The Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA),  in their Overly Creative Minds (OCM) space. This workshop was amazing and was facilitated by Cory Bulpitt, a local graffiti artist in Vancouver, BC. The students had such a great time and were happy to welcome in UNYA youth to this workshop.

2012 Summer Program-Touring September 6, 2012

This summer the NYP gave many tours. We had some fabulous groups in this summer like the UBC jump start program for Aboriginal first year students.

One of the greatest things about the NYP is the touring. The students gain confidence from touring and sharing their knowledge with the public. Throughout the summer the students are asked to choose an object from the Multiversity Galleries and to find a personal connection to that object. After that they go in to the Archives, search at Xwi7Xwa Library at The First Nations House of Learning, go online to the Reciprocal Research Network (RRN) and do some research. The students are also encouraged to ask their family members and community Elders for information. After they research they write a script which after memorization and practice they present to the public. This process gives the students a chance to connect with objects from their own communities and to their own histories .The students are also encouraged to pick objects from around the world in order to explore other cultures. They usually come up with a tour featuring three objects each. They also present the 30th year documentary and show guests how to use the RRN. The students tour hundreds of guests a summer, from local Aboriginal groups to people visiting the Museum from all around the world.

One of the projects that the NYP participated in this year was the creation of a Poetry and Photography Anthology with The Urban Native Youth Association. This anthology was funded with the generous support of TD Bank Financial Group.  We brought in guest speakers such as Camielle Esquival for a photography workshop, Wendy Morton  a local BC poet, Peter Morin a First Nations Artist, Zaccheus Jackson Nyce a First Nations poet, and Lynda Grey a First Nations author. These guest speakers taught the youth how to take photographs, write poetry, and talk about First Nations history and art. The finished anthology titled, a place to call home, will be available for educational, First Nations and youth organizations in the Spring of 2013 in both printed format and PDF format here on our website.

I am from the Heiltsuk Nation. I come from a high ranking family, my late grandfather was a high ranking chief, my late father carried that role and now my eldest brother carries that role. I have a lot of interest in expanding my knowledge about my culture. This is my first year in the Native Youth Program. It was an amazing opportunity to take part in this program because I gained more knowledge about different Aboriginal heritages in a Museum setting.

Check back next week for a post by NYP student Willard Ned.
